The Alberni Valley Gleaning Project started in 2012 and has harvested over 35,000 lbs of fruit in the 5 years since it began. It is a food recovery project that provides an opportunity for community members and people who want fruit to pick fruit that is extra or might otherwise go to waste. Volunteers receive 1/3, 1/3 goes to the tree/home owners and 1/3 of the fruit goes to the food bank or other local charities. Thousands of pounds of fruit have been donated to many charities across the city. When there is more fruit than the volunteers and homeowners want, it is sold to raise funds for the project.
In partnership with Alberni Valley Transition Town Society, the Alberni Valley Gleaning Project is supported by the City of Port Alberni, Dry Creek Community Garden, Alberni Valley Bear Smart, Eden Tree Farm and Gardening, Alberni Valley Coop, Buckerfields, Coastal Communitites Credit Union Private Wealth Group, and the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.
