The Alberni Valley Transition Town Society (AVTTS) is a developing Food Hub in conjunction with Island Heath. As a developing food hub, AVTTS is working to create partnerships and strengthen inter-agency collaboration to support initiatives and action towards greater food security in the Alberni-Clayoquot Region. Core functions of the hub are to build community awareness and knowledge about food and food systems, develop partnerships in the community and across the island and build capacity to increase food security.

In 2012, AVTTS developed a Community Food Assessment which serves as an inventory of where we are at with Food Security in the Valley.

Rescue the Pumpkins! Many pumpkins go to waste post Halloween, and we have the ability to change that! Each year the AV Food Hub and a great group of volunteers collects and processes unwanted pumpkins from the grocery stores and resident homes. We then process the food for redistribution. There are three categories that the pumpkins can go towards: human consumption, animal (livestock) consumption, or organic waste.
The Alberni Valley Gleaning Project aims to decrease waste and increase distribution of delicious, nutritious, and local food. Our Valley has a lot of potential for food production, and we need to ensure that all this amazing food gets used. We are a non-profit organization that depends on donations, community funding, and many hours of volunteer work.
