AFI is one of the oldest Farmers' Institutes in British Columbia. It has been working for over a century to improve conditions of rural life, promote agriculture and public health, and help arrange distribution channels for its members.

Founded in 1898, the AFI operates under the Farmers and Womens Institutes Act of British Columbia. The AFI is also a member District A - the voice of a collection of FIs on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast that advise the government on matters of interest to Farmers' Institutes.

The objectives of the AFI are as follows. All members are encouraged to engage with the AFI so that we can collaboratively work towards the fulfillment of these purposes:

(a) to improve conditions of rural life so that settlement may be permanent and prosperous;

(b) to promote the theory and practice of agriculture;

(c) to arrange on behalf of its members for the purchase, distribution or sale of commodities, supplies or products;

(d) to act generally on behalf of its members in all matters incidental to agricultural pursuits and rural development;

(e) to promote home economics, public health, child welfare, education and better schools.
